Smart Railway Maintenance Begins with Built-in RFID

With the Chainway MC51 built-in RFID reader, railway maintenance becomes traceable down to component level: fewer missed faults, faster repairs and fully digital records.

The challenge

High-speed trains and locomotives depend on thousands of critical components, such as bogies, brakes and traction motors, for safe operation. Railway maintenance has traditionally relied on manual inspections and paper records, which leads to incomplete data, limited traceability and delayed responses to faults.

As the industry moves towards preventive, data-driven maintenance, there is a growing need for solutions covering the full lifecycle, from procurement and installation through monitoring and scheduled servicing to retirement.

The main problems:

  • Fragmented data: a single locomotive contains more than 2,000 key components. Data is scattered across manufacturers, depots and maintenance teams, making unified tracking difficult.
  • Decisions based on limited information: most operational and maintenance data is undocumented or isolated, so failure prediction is often guesswork.
  • Harsh operating environment: railway workshops are full of metal structures, electromagnetic interference, oil and dust, which disrupt conventional electronic devices.
  • Strict regulations: railway rules require one-component, one-file traceability. Manual data entry is slow and open to errors and fraud.

The solution

Critical components are fitted with high-performance anti-metal RFID tags carrying a unique ID. During maintenance, staff retrieve key information, such as specifications, installation location and service history, with a single scan. The work is done with the Chainway MC51 handheld with built-in RFID reader.

Industrial ruggedness

  • IP67 water and dust resistance; reliable operation at high altitude, high humidity and high temperature.
  • The reinforced housing survives 1.5 m drops on all six sides.
  • The 6-inch touchscreen works with gloves, with an algorithm that filters accidental touches.
  • Hardware buttons start RFID reading, barcode scanning and custom functions quickly.

RFID performance in demanding environments

  • The compact built-in UHF antenna combines portability with strong performance, ideal for confined spaces and warehouse work.
  • Impinj Gen2X technology increases tag sensitivity and read range. Interference-resistant radio technology maintains recognition accuracy of up to 99.8% even in metal-heavy environments.
  • Support for multi-tag reading and large-memory, railway-grade tags for structured digital records.

Intelligent data management

  • GPS and sensors link component data with operator ID, operation time and quality checks in real time.
  • 5G connectivity syncs maintenance logs to the cloud instantly, creating tamper-proof digital records.
  • Large storage handles up to 100,000 records and allows offline work.
  • On scanning, the display automatically shows component specifications, inspection standards and past records. Search time drops to 10 seconds and work order processing is 65% more efficient.

The result

Operational efficiency

  • Missed fault rate reduced from 18% to 0.5%.
  • Inventory checks 12 times faster: inspecting one vehicle takes half an hour instead of 3 days.
  • Average repair time reduced from 4.5 hours to 22 minutes.
  • Integrated UHF RFID, 5G and sensor modules cut system deployment time by 60%.

Safety and compliance

  • Every component has a unique RFID tag, creating a tamper-proof digital record.
  • Record-keeping is 100% digital, and audit efficiency has improved by 90%.

Economic benefits

  • Share of preventive maintenance up from 30% to 85%.
  • Unplanned failures down by 52%.
  • Component lifespan extended by 15–20%, reducing total lifecycle costs by more than 10%.

The solution has been deployed at high-speed rail bases for 12 major component types, such as wheelsets and bearings. The approach also applies to metro, urban rail, aviation and heavy equipment maintenance.
